| Candlesticks & Lamps |
| The Belleek "lighting" range is quite small but varied
and includes a number of finely crafted candelabra, oil lamps and a nightlight as well as
candlesticks and extinguishers. The Cherub candelabra has stood the test of time and has
been made in small quantities throughout most periods, though it is quite difficult to
find early examples in good condition. In the 1870s these were being sold for around 30/-. The two oil lamps demonstrate Belleek's designers' versatility in uniting parts of other pieces to form a completely new piece, both having the same base but different "oil wells". The range of candlesticks is quite wide compromising the large Gothic, Piano, Thorn, Boy on Dolphin, and Boy and Vine Candlesticks together with the small Boudoir and the Allingham candlesticks. Of these the Boy on Dolphin and the Thorn candlestick are the only two which seem to have been reintroduced. there have been other models introduced but they don't seem to have been very popular and were withdrawn. There are only three recorded candle extinguishers but it is fair to speculate that the Belleek range might have been larger since Derby and particularly Worcester made a wide selection of porcelain extinguishers. Occasionally these extinguishers are mistakenly called snuffs but that the name is more correctly applied to the earlier device made of silver or brass, looking a bit like scissors with a special blade, which was used to put out the flame. |
