| Vases, Spills & Cornucopias. |
| The dictionary tells us that a vase "is an ornamental
container to hold flowers and water", but this is clearly an over-simplified
definition. For instance the Spill Vase was designed to be placed on the mantel shelf to
hold spills used to take a light from the fire before the days of matches. In fact it has been quite difficult to decide what the Belleek range constitutes a vase as opposed to an ornament and it seems that Belleek has had this problem too. When registering the Echinus Footed Bowl and the Prince of Wales Ice Pail they were described as "vases". However in the pottery photograph album the Echinus Bowl is described as a sugar bowl and the Ice Pail as an Ice Pail. Among other Vases registered by Belleek were the Cleary Spill Pot, the Marine Vase, the Water Lily Vase and the Flying Fish Vase. Many of Belleek's vases depict nature, particularly the sea, with shells and dolphins in great abundance. Mrs. Armstrong is credited with this influence as she was a well-known landscape painter and had exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy before her marriage in 1848. Other designs like the Nautilus on Coral or the Hand Holding Basket are to be found made by other potteries like Royal Worcester and Goss. |
