Tea Sets

Thea Sinensis is the Latin name of the tea tree which, if allowed, can reach a height of 30 feet. Native to Assam, China and Japan. Tea was first brought to Europe by the Dutch in 1610 and to England in 1644. However, it was not until 1865 when tea drinking became so fashionable in Society that tea growing was introduced into Ceylon and India. They are now the largest exporters of tea in the world.

Tea Ware was Belleek's largest range. The déjeuner or cabaret sets were made up of a tray, teapot, cream, sugar and two or four cups and saucers. Some designs only consisted of these pieces but others like the Shamrock were much larger and have been added to in other periods.

The Echinus tea service is the most famous. It was ordered by Queen Victoria for her own use and the Belleek album features a photograph of the "Echinus Déjeuner tea ordered for her Majesty The Queen". The design of the Echinus tea and breakfast service was registered at the board of Trade on 22 February 1869 by "Bob W Armstrong, Melrose, Belleek". In fact the Artichoke service was the first to be registered, preceding the Echinus by some four months.
